A Kind of Story

Rand O’Malley dreams of superstardom. He hopes to one day sing the blues like a rock god. Moving to New York City and hiring a new manager are steps to make his dreams a reality. But nothing moves as fast as Rand would like, and everyone has opinions, for example that he should keep certain pieces of himself quiet if he plans on making it in the Big Apple. Like his bisexuality.

Will Sanders is a gifted musician who dazzles Rand with his ability to coax gorgeous notes from an electric guitar one moment and play the piano like a professional the next. He’s a geek, but Rand isn’t concerned about Will’s pressed exterior clashing with his tattoos. His focus is music. Yet there’s something about Will that makes Rand think there’s much more to the quiet college student than he lets on. As Rand’s dreams begin to materialize, he’s forced to reconsider his priorities and find his own kind of truth. One that might include Will.

I found most of this book boring and banal. There was too much about other people, namely Terry and Leah. Rand's character was just a self centered boy, who bullied everyone into doing what he wanted or ignored anything he didn't like. He had both Leah and Terry threaten him and Will, yet he let Will get blindsided. Will was just an enigma. All the fuss about him and Marty, and the speculation with Marty and Will's mother, went nowhere and seemed pointless. I really didn't see much to his character at all. The cross dressing wasn't used much as part of his character, just as a disguise. Then when everything blew up, Rand says he's sorry and Will just says okay and boom, they're together. The ending seemed very lame and anticlimactic.

A Kind of Truth A Kind of Stories Book 1 edition by Lane Hayes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved so much of this book. Rand's our POV character and he is very often an ass. It's entertaining, and no wonder Will surprises him. The dynamic is great, and so are the ones with Rand's bandmates, but he and Will's interactions are at the heart of why I enjoyed their story.

I have three quibbles, one an important one for books; how it ends.

First - aaargh, Rand's reflexes suck, several times. He's a stage performer, and I stopped believing it was realistic. Second, several times Rand's bossy in ways that reminded me unpleasantly of how males treated me, presumptuous and 'take charge.' I'd have loved for Will to call him on it. Last, the epilogue. 90% of it was made trivial by explaining to me what I'd just read, plus listing what's happened but not making it matter. We didn't need the epilogue. If you assume they make their lives work as a couple, you can skip it.

And yet, I loved so much of this story, I still recommend it.
I love these books! Loving Rand and Will. There are some very touching and amazing moments in these books - also loved Zeke and Benny's book. Thank you thank you as well for Seth Clayton's wonderful wonderful narration of these books - he conveys beautiful characters and their emotions. Lane has really put the life in these characters, and made them real for me. I love their feelings, detail, and the POV writing. I would say that her writing is a step above the rest in the M/M genre. As a straight person I have only "found" the merits of this genre in the last year or so. I find the M/M POV and perspective excellent. While I realize some of this may not be realistic as there are quite a few female writers of this genre - much feels plausible to me. Excellent writing! You join Cardeno C, Alexander, Roan Parrish and several others in my list of "go-to" authors that make M/M romance beautiful and real.
I liked the way the books started off. I liked Rand's character and the quiet genius that was Will. I love books that focus on music and what it means to the characters which is why I was drawn to this one. What disappointed me was all the loose ends. Leah's character was horrible and in the end, she just left while trying to ruin the band. How was she able to do so much damage while, supposedly, bing hired by a company as the band's PR person? What happened with Terry??? Martin???? Will's parents???? Too many unanswered questions that left me feeling as if the book was incomplete.
With A Kind of Truth, Lane Hayes has created a wild, wild ride of a novel. Against the backdrop of the world of rock ‘n roll, Rand O’Malley has come to New York City with his band Spiral to make it big. But this bisexual lead singer doesn’t count on meeting music student William Sanders. William is referred to Rand as someone who can give him guitar lessons so Rand can up his skills. But William has a secret. And here is where this synopsis ends, for I refuse to spoil the fun. In William, Hayes spins a character so rich, so full, so enigmatic that we, the readers, cannot help but be delighted, mystified, and in the end, hopelessly fall in love. Hayes is an amazing writer. Each of her characters, not just William, is fleshed out to the max. Her plot is unpredictable. And her message is clear truth is the only way to live a truly authentic life. The headiness of the rock world coupled with the arc of William’s life as it plays against Rand’s is nothing short of magnificent storytelling. In a genre where character and plot development are sometimes sacrificed for steamy sex scenes, Hayes is set apart. Oh, yes, the steam is there, but Rand, William, and their story always takes precedence. Thank you, Lane Hayes, for enriching my drab world for the few days it took to devour your book.
